Dr. K. Sharmila Banu was in the department of Obstetrics & Gynecology in JIPMER (1992-1993), Pondicherry. Then she did her M.D in Obstetrics & Gynecology from the premier institute of our countryAIIMS in New Delhi (1994-1996). Subsequently she finished her DNB in Obstetrics & Gynecology. Her thesis work on Chorion Villus sampling won her a sliver medal from The Association of Obstetrics & Gynecologists New Delhi, going on to win her citation in an international conference on Early Prenatal Diagnosis. Started her practice in clinical set up in the year 1998.

While most of her colleagues left to UK and USA she returned to her home state for starting her practice without any support, being the first medico in the family. Despite offers from tertiary hospitals she decided to start her own setup. Her investment was the skills and knowledge she had acquired to handle high risk pregnancies.

Nowhere in the field of medicine does one face such anguish as in case of loss  of offspring or mother. Most pregnancies are low risk with successful outcomes. Less common high risk pregnancies have hazardous outcomes, both to mother and baby. Countdown starts with early booking visit with positive pregnancy test.She strongly believes that if they are handled competently then these cases are sure to become success stories.

While approaching such anxious couple, despite Hitech investigation and treatment, the fundamental skill is patience according to Dr Sharmila Banu. Before entering into their circle of confidence, she develops a strong and live rapport with them. Systematic and faithful analysis of the problem is the next step.
